How To Save Your Home If You Have Basement Water Damage

If your home floods you may need to know how to clean basement water damage.  The first thing you need to do is get the water out as soon as possible.  If there is a lot of water, you will want to rent a pump to get the water out quickly.  You may even want to hire a company that will pump the water out for you.  If there is not a lot of water left standing, you can use a shop vac or wet/dry vacuum cleaner to suck up the excess water.

The water damage repairs that will take place at this point is to bring in some fans and get air circulating around the basement.  Open all the windows if there are any and leave the door to the upper level of the house open as well.  Let the fans blow over night so that any corners are thoroughly dried out.  You can then asses the basement water damage in a dry environment.

In the morning, you will want to check any appliances that are on the floor such as washers, dryers, refrigerators or freezers for any electrical damage.  Many times a flood will ruin appliances and render them useless.  Do not plug any appliance in or turn on any electricity to any appliances that are not completely dried out.  You run the risk of electrical shock if you do.  While you are waiting for your appliances to dry out, you can sanitize them to make sure they do not start to grow mold.

The next water damage repairs you want to make it to check any other item that was on the floor when the flood took place.  Boxes will attract mold very quickly so if you have any wet boxes, you want to replace them with dry ones and throw the wet ones out.

The final thing to do to clean basement water damage is to sanitize the entire basement.  You do not want any mold to grow so you will probably want to hire a professional to do this.  If the flood was extensive, you may also want to have your foundation checked for any damage as well.
